Matariki: A Time for Reflection, Gratitude and New Beginnings

Matariki: A Time for Reflection, Gratitude and New Beginnings

As winter settles across Aotearoa and the stars of Matariki rise in the early morning sky, we are offered a rare invitation to pause.

In a world that constantly encourages us to move faster, achieve more and fill every moment, Matariki reminds us of something different. It reminds us to reflect on where we have been, appreciate where we are, and set intentions for where we hope to go.

At Oracle Altar, we believe that meaningful rituals help us reconnect with ourselves amidst the busyness of everyday life. Matariki is a beautiful opportunity to create space for reflection, gratitude and renewal.

Whether you gather with loved ones, spend time in nature, prepare a special meal or simply carve out a quiet moment for yourself, Matariki offers a chance to honour the past and welcome the future with intention.

What is Matariki?

Matariki marks the Māori New Year and is celebrated when the Matariki star cluster, known internationally as the Pleiades, becomes visible in New Zealand's winter sky.

For generations, Matariki has been a time of remembrance, celebration and planning for the year ahead. It is deeply connected to the natural world, community and the cycles of life.

Traditionally, Matariki was a time to gather, share knowledge, honour those who had passed, celebrate the present and prepare for the future.

Today, Matariki continues to be observed in many ways throughout Aotearoa. Communities come together through cultural events, storytelling, feasting, stargazing and acts of reflection.

At its heart, Matariki encourages us to focus on three themes:

Remembering.

Giving thanks.

Looking forward.

These themes make Matariki the perfect time to create a personal ritual of reflection.

The Power of Ritual

A ritual does not need to be complicated.

In fact, some of the most meaningful rituals are often the simplest.

Making a cup of tea before sunrise.

Taking a mindful walk.

Writing in a journal.

Sitting quietly beneath the stars.

Lighting a candle.

Preparing a meal for family and friends.

Rituals help transform ordinary moments into intentional ones. They invite us to slow down and become fully present.

Unlike routines, which are often completed on autopilot, rituals encourage mindfulness and connection. They help us mark important transitions and create space for reflection.

Matariki offers the perfect opportunity to create such a moment.

A Simple Matariki Reflection Ritual

You don't need any special tools or experience to create a meaningful Matariki ritual.

Set aside twenty to thirty minutes where you can be uninterrupted.

You may wish to gather:

A journal or notebook

A candle

A warm drink

Fresh or dried flowers

Crystals or meaningful objects

A cosy blanket

A comfortable place to sit

Create an environment that feels calm and grounding.

Turn off notifications.

Dim the lights.

Take a few slow breaths.

Allow yourself to arrive fully in the present moment.

Part One: Remember

One of the most important aspects of Matariki is remembering those who have passed and reflecting on the experiences that have shaped us.

Spend a few moments thinking about the year that has been.

Consider:

What challenges helped me grow?

What lessons have I learned?

What moments stand out most clearly?

Who would I like to honour or remember?

Allow memories to arise naturally.

Some may bring joy, while others may bring sadness. Both have their place.

The act of remembering helps us acknowledge the journey that has brought us to this moment.

Part Two: Give Thanks

Gratitude is central to the spirit of Matariki.

Take a page in your journal and write down:

Three things you are grateful for

Three people who have supported you

Three moments of beauty or joy from the past year

These do not need to be extraordinary.

Perhaps it was a conversation with a friend.

A walk along the beach.

A family gathering.

A quiet morning with a cup of tea.

When we intentionally recognise what is good in our lives, we often discover there is more abundance than we first realised.

Part Three: Set Intentions

The final part of your ritual is looking forward.

Matariki is often described as a time of renewal and fresh beginnings.

Rather than focusing on goals or resolutions, consider the energy you wish to invite into the coming season.

Ask yourself:

What am I ready to release?

What deserves more of my attention?

How do I want to feel?

What qualities would I like to cultivate?

Write down three intentions for the months ahead.

They might be:

More presence

More creativity

More rest

More confidence

More connection

More self-trust

Allow your intentions to be gentle and meaningful.

The purpose is not perfection, but direction.

Bringing Matariki into Everyday Life

While Matariki marks the beginning of a new year, its teachings can stay with us throughout the seasons that follow.

The invitation to reflect, express gratitude and live with intention is one we can return to again and again.

You might choose to begin a weekly journaling practice.

You might create a quiet morning ritual.

You might spend more time connecting with loved ones or immersing yourself in nature.

Small moments of intention often create the greatest shifts over time.
